Dear all,
Over the past few days, we’ve been running multiple SONiC builds as part
of the SCOMB effort, and I spent some time stress testing the build process.
A few quick observations:
* The best speedup so far was with *16 parallel jobs*
* Build time was approximately *3 hours*
* A completely fresh build (no cached/pre-sourced images) takes around
*~5 hours*
Even with these optimizations, a build time of ~3 hours is not practical
for day-to-day development, particularly when multiple users are
iterating on builds. To support a more collaborative and efficient
workflow, this needs to be reduced further.
From what I’ve seen so far:
* There are likely *redundant packages and images* in the build
* Not everything included seems necessary for a *basic or iterative
build*
So a first step could be:
* Reviewing dependencies more critically
* Stripping down the build to only what’s actually required
That said, this is just an initial direction. There are likely better
approaches (e.g., caching strategies, registry mirroring, incremental
builds), so it would be great to get more input.

Hey everyone,
I am very excited to announce our *second ALASCA community Hackathon*.
We are inviting you all to join us on *July 1st and 2nd in Stuttgart at
Urban Spaces* (https://urbanspaces.de/de) to get together again and
spend 2 days working on and further advancing the assisting projects as
well as related topics within ALASCA! We are planning on doing full day
hacking sessions for thpse 2 days. On top of that, all Hackathon
participants are invited to join our *member UhuruTec's summer party in
the evening on day 1*, so we are all set for a great evening event.
Since we are currently working on *SCOMB *and trying to set up the SONiC
Community Build, I was thinking that that would be a perfect chance for
us to get together in person and work towards that goal. If that is
something that you guys are interested in, we'd love it if you joined us
on July 1st and 2nd in Stuttgart.

installation date is too close now (next week), however please let us know

pick things back up after the christmas break and really get started.
As a next step, I'm sending everyone the meeting notes from our first
meeting back in December. We did orginially plan having a SCOMB meeting
every two weeks, however due to full calendars, we've decided to get
started with a monthly meeting. How does the third Thursday of every
month sound?
So that would be Thursday, February 19th - March 19th - April 16th and

Ich möchte euch gern über zwei Dinge informieren, die mir kürzlich über den Weg gelaufen sind:
1. Deutschland-Stack: Die zweite Konsultationsrunde des BMDS wurde abgeschlossen. Dabei hat unter anderm das Sovereign Cloud Stack <https://sovereigncloudstack.org/> (SCS) Projekt erneut eine Einwendung abgegeben, die ich euch an diese Mail mit angehängt habe. In der Stellungnahme heißt es:
Im Bereich von Software-Defined Networking bietet sich ggf. ein Blick in Richtung SONiC an. Im Rahmen des SCS Förderprojektes wurde hier bereits tiefergehend geschaut und auch in der ALASCA-Community wird gerade aktiv an SONiC Community Builds gearbeitet.
2. Digital Networks Act: Die Initiative der EU-Kommission zielt darauf ab, den Zugang zu sicheren, schnellen und zuverlässigen Verbindungen für den Übergang zu einer cloudbasierten Infrastruktur und künstlicher Intelligenz zu verbessern. Ich bin über die Stellungnahme der FSFE <https://fsfe.org/news/2026/news-20260218-01.en.html> darauf aufmerksam geworden und könnte mir gut (als Laie) vorstellen, dass die Ziele des Community Builds sehr gut mit denen der FSFE und der grundsätzlichen Zielrichtung übereinstimmen. Es wäre daher sinnvoll ein kurzes Feedback bis zum 16. April 2026 über das EU-Portal abzugeben <https://ec.europa.eu/info/law/better-regulation/have-your-say/initiatives/1…> und damit dann auch Werbung zu machen.

BDBOS tritt Linux Foundation bei und treibt Vorhaben im Open-Source-Bereich voran
Die #BDBOS <https://www.linkedin.com/search/results/all/?keywords=%23bdbos&origin=HASH_…> arbeitet fortwährend an der #Modernisierung <https://www.linkedin.com/search/results/all/?keywords=%23modernisierung&ori…> ihrer #Netzinfrastrukturen <https://www.linkedin.com/search/results/all/?keywords=%23netzinfrastrukture…>, die einen der Grundpfeiler der digitalen Kommunikationsarchitektur in der öffentlichen Verwaltung bilden. Dabei spielt der Einsatz von Open-Source-Software eine wichtige Rolle, um die digitale Souveränität zu stärken. Zur weiteren Förderung des Open-Source-Ansatzes ist die BDBOS der Linux Foundation beigetreten.
Der Beitritt und das Engagement der BDBOS schaffen Möglichkeiten, gemeinsam mit der Linux-Community an neuen Standards und Lösungen zu arbeiten. Diese sollen perspektivisch auch den Weg in die öffentlichen IT-Netze finden.
Aktuell liegt einer der Schwerpunkte auf der Netzwerk-Software #SONiC <https://www.linkedin.com/search/results/all/?keywords=%23sonic&origin=HASH_…> als Betriebssystem für Router und Switche. while attempting to build SONiC for the Broadcom ASIC from the master
branch.
The build process is currently failing due to the following error:
