In this month's talk, please welcome *Friedrich Zahn *and *Dr. Daniel Gerber *(Software Engineers at ALASCA FOCIS) for the following talk: * * *ALASCA Tech-Talk #38: //Going full arctic circle: Running ALASCA on open cloud infrastructure & standards//* /Fostering open source software communities in the 2020s needs more than a git server and a mailing list. However, ALASCA is the association for operational cloud infrastructure, so let’s get a plate of dogfood! We’ll provide some insights how we are running ALASCA’s infrastructure on open cloud infrastructure and utilize open standards, what works well for us - and what does not. Specifically, we’ll showcase our OpenTofu repo to manage the ALASCA community resources based on the SCS-mandated Domain Manager role. It is accompanied by RacStack (formerly known as Raclette Billing Dashboard) to monitor actual resource usage./ /We’ll also talk about our autoscaling GitLab and Woodpecker CI runners, as another example of an SCS-IaaS based application - and how we managed to DoS our cloud within the first week of bringing them to prod./ /Users might know our GitLab projects, docs pages and are happy to pull from our registries. But that’s only the tip of the iceberg - we’ll visualize the suprising number of infrastructure services that are needed to run ALASCA and support our projects, and how we hope to increase transparency and reproducibility in the future./ We can't wait to talk tech with you! In this month's talk, please welcome *Tor Lund-Larsen *(CEO at Cyberus Technology) for the following talk: * * *ALASCA Tech-Talk #37: Introducing Cyberus Hypervisor: an open-source, BSI-accredited hypervisor for European cloud sovereignty.*/ There are too many hypervisors “out there” to count. Why do we need another one and what is so special about the Cyberus Hypervisor?/ /In this talk, we introduce the Cyberus Hypervisor: a lean, BSI-in-accreditation virtualization layer built on Linux KVM/Cloud Hypervisor, written in Rust, co-developed and supported in Germany. We compare our hypervisor with other open-source alternatives such as QEMU and explain why Linux KVM/Cloud Hypervisor is the right foundation for workloads requiring VS-NfD accreditation; a security level for classified documents in the public sector by the German Federal Office for Information Security (BSI)./ /We will share the status of the project, walk through real-world deployment scenarios and use-cases, share benchmark data, and show how Cyberus works within the open-source community. The exchange point must be reliable to ensure traffic flows smoothly between peers. To enhance the reliability of the peering LAN, monitoring is essential. IXpect addresses this need by continuously monitoring Broadcast, Unicast, and Multicast (BUM) traffic within the peering LAN. By detecting packets that are either unexpected or faulty, IXpect notifies IXP administrators, allowing them to work with the administrator of the misconfigured network to resolve the issue. This talk will explain how IXpect works and how you can use it even if you are not running an IXP./ We can't wait to talk tech with you! In this month's talk, please welcome *C**Vasu Chandrasekhara ***(Advisor and Ambassador NeoNephos) for the following talk: * * *ALASCA Tech-Talk #35: **Sovereignty = func(Ecosystems, Interoperability); */The warnings of the Draghi Report serve as a strategic wake-up call. To date, many European initiatives aimed at building a sovereign alternative have failed due to their own structures, national preferences, and, ultimately, the fragmentation of technical offerings. The strategic alternative lies in foundation-led, vendor-neutral open-source software and interoperable & portable standards. Through 8RA and the funding projects of the "Important Project of Common European Interest" (IPCEI), work is underway to create a federated multi-provider cloud-edge continuum. A few companies from the IPCEI-CIS have recognized this wake-up call and transitioned their projects and operations into the neutral NeoNephos Foundation. This presentation will address the challenges posed within the IPCEI, outline some of the technical considerations of NeoNephos, and delve into a project featuring a new, innovative approach./ /Ultimately, the responsibility lies with us: developers, project managers, and decision-makers. We already rely heavily on open source (from Linux and Kubernetes to OTEL, ... PyTorch, vLLM, upto llm-d, if you are also into AI). This time, you can look forward to the following topic and speakers: _*Standardized observability at scale with uMon *_ *Marc Schöchlin (**Technical Lead uStack IaaS and uMon Observability**), UhuruTec * An essential aspect of the reliable and sustainable operation of cloud platforms is the use of suitable observability mechanisms to evaluate the past, current, and future behavior of these systems. The implementation of a complete observability platform not only requires in-depth knowledge of the technical components used to operate it in a scalable, available, and compliant manner, but also practical operating experience and architectural understanding of the cloud platform being operated. The open source project “uMon” aims to provide a standardized approach to collecting and processing metrics, log files, and traces. This allows platform operators to jointly use a standardized, scalable, and highly advanced observability platform in a “community of practice” approach. The open source approach allows mutual benefit from operational knowledge, easier management of complexity, and savings in effort that can be directed toward more important issues. The presentation will provide an overview of the technologies used (Prometheus, Mimir, Zabbix, Opensearch, Kafka, etc.), the observability principles, and the actual technical implementation. Amount of data processed is ever growing, especially with recent development of AI. To achieve reasonable processing speed, it is crucial to have fast both network and storage. In this talk we share our experience from building fast network foundation for Yaook cluster using common (not InfiniBand) switches/cabling where each node is connected to two switches. We name challenges we faced, describe how we solved them and summarize lessons learned. We demonstrate our approach on live demo, demonstrating both improved network speed and redundancy. After our Christmas break, we would like to kick off the new year with a new Tech-Talk at the end of the month. On Friday, January 30, 2026, you can look forward to the following exciting talk: --- *How to build an SCS-compliant cloud environment for the benefit of the ALASCA community */ Matthias Büchse (ALASCA FOCIS)/ With ALASCA FOCIS, we want to publicly establish the viability of open solutions through case studies we do in cooperation with relevant parties. Case in point: ALASCA founding member C&H recently set up a new SCS-compliant OpenStack cluster, donating big parts to the ALASCA community to work on the ALASCA stack, to host Gitlab runners, and other things. We accompanied this installation, providing advice regarding SCS compliance, and we observed the process in order to prepare comprehensive documentation.
